Sh200 Million Bribe, Supreme Court of Kenya And the Supreme Bribe

If it is supreme, it should be beyond reproach. If it is supreme, it should attract respect, adoration and love.

If it is indeed supreme, it should exude warmth, confidence and acceptability.

The Supreme Court of Kenya is facing the biggest test of its short life and which, if it fails to pass, it will totally erode the trust any Kenyan still has on it. 

The alleged Sh200 million bribe could be the one straw that broke the camel’s back.

The perception is that the supreme Sh200 million, if indeed was dished out, was not for one. That, it could have been for many.

The Supreme Court’s reputation is at stake here. And an injury to a reputation is one wound that takes a whole lot of time to heal, if at all it heals. Some people have never forgiven this court for closing the door to the admission of some extra evidence when they contested the presidential election three years ago.

Reputation-wise, this Court has not been doing well since 2013 and such a monumental accusation like this is only bound to make things worse. For instance, if the accusations are proved, the court will be dead and buried. And forgotten.

The speed at which CJ Willy Mutunga took up this matter is commendable but what will be satisfactory is the speed at which the investigations are done and what actions taken thereafter. Concerns are flaring up already that a Judiciary investigating itself can never bring forth anything tangible. Or, would never really go hard on one of its straying sheep. 

Those concerns should be addressed sooner than later before people decide not to believe any outcome of the internal investigations. 

When black dots appear on the white linen the best thing to do is to wash it to regain its former glory. Of course, it is not that straightforward and you cannot just wash away this matter plus its protagonists but you can set up a fool proof process to establish the facts.

Supreme beings are normally respected and adored because of the belief that they possess special abilities, are fair and perfect.  

If you are supreme, behave like you are supreme. Especially, if you are a Supreme Court judge.
